What is Block Blast?

Block Blast is a block puzzle played on a fixed 8×8 grid. Pieces don't fall from the top the way they do in Tetris. They wait in a tray under the board, and you drag each one to any empty space. Fill a row or a column from edge to edge and it clears.

The original Block Blast is a mobile game by Hungry Studio, released in 2021 for iPhone, iPad and Android. The game on this page is a browser version with the same rules.

The whole game is one idea: fit the pieces, clear the lines, don't run out of space.

How a round of Block Blast works

You start with an empty grid and a tray of shapes under it. The small board below is a six by six sketch of the idea: tap cells to fill a line.

Pick a shape from the tray and drag it onto the grid.
Drop it on any free cells. There's no gravity and nothing falls.
A row or column filled from edge to edge clears, and you score.
When the tray is empty, new shapes arrive.
The round ends when no shape in the tray fits on the board.

Keep the center openSpace in the middle is the easiest place to fit a big shape later.

Block Blast vs classic Tetris

Falling vs. placing: In Tetris, pieces fall from the top. In Block Blast you place them anywhere on a fixed grid.
Speed vs. planning: Tetris gets faster as you play. Block Blast has no timer.
Game over: Tetris ends when the stack hits the top. Block Blast ends when no piece fits on the board.
